Who Wants to be Our Guest(s)?!

March 12, 2013

It only took a year and a half...better late than never, right?!

If you have been a guest at our house since we moved into it exactly 18 months ago, you probably noticed the lack of effort we put into furnishing the guest bedrooms. After all, what was the rush? We don't have kids; We don't have overnight guests very often. I thought as long as the guest bathroom was usable, the other rooms didn't have to be fit for overnight visitors, right? Wrong. Well, yes and no.

As I began finishing these rooms, I wanted each one to have the feel of a cozy hotel room...furnished with most of the things one would need for an overnight or weekend stay. Who else to turn to other than one miss Martha Stewart? Her list of houseguest essentials gave me quite a few ideas. My favorite? The chilled bottled water. Love it!

When we moved in, we had a queen-size mattress and frame already, so we set it up in the first guest bedroom. We had no nightstands, lamps, dressers, nothing else. So until a few weeks ago, that bed was the only thing in that room...unless you count the storage boxes and old Halloween decorations. It didn't even have a comforter set or pillows on it. It was in a sad state of affair. In fact, we would keep the door shut so no one could see the neglect, ha!

Here is the first room FINALLY complete:

These are not very big rooms, and this is a queen-sized bed. There wasn't room for much else. :)

This idea was not from Martha, but I did steal it from our 2011 stay at a Destin beachside inn.

Other guest essentials (some courtesy of OEC :P): A sewing kit, mirror, hand sanitizer, tape measure, note-taking tools, etc.

Chilled bottled water.

Love these lamps.

This chair is my favorite new piece for this room.

Of course, we're always on a budget, so here's what we shelled out for this room:
  • Comforter set: Bed, Bath & Beyond, $109 on clearance, came with comforter, bed skirt, sheet set, 2 euro sham covers, 2 regular sham covers and 2 throw pillows. This was BEFORE we used one of those 20%-off coupons they send in the mail.
  • Nightstands: T.J. Maxx, $59 each
  • Lamps: Kirklands, $16 each on clearance
  • Chair: Kirklands, $63 on clearance
  • Throw: Target, $7.25 on clearance
  • Curtains: Target, $17 each on clearance
  • Tray: Hobby Lobby, $4.99 on sale
  • "Ice Bucket": Hobby Lobby, $4.80 on sale

For the second room, the bed frame we originally used was built (by Hubs) for the queen mattress now being used in the other room. Due to the placement of the window and closet doors, there was no way a queen bed was fitting in this room. So, Hubs took it apart, resized it for a full-size mattress, and voila! Geometric perfection!

The window treatments came with the comforter set...the old-school valance is beginning to grow on me. :)

I love this ottoman! Target bargain!

Those "nightstands" are actually the end tables from our living room. I just used them to see what the lamps looked like next to the bed. We're still searching for the right nightstands for this room.

  • Mattress set: Mathis Brothers, $162 (HUGE bargain! Although I can't speak for the comfort yet...)
  • Comforter set: Macy's, $79 (after-Thanksgiving sale!!), came with comforter, bed skirt (not being used), sheet set, 2 euro sham covers, 2 regular sham covers, 2 throw pillows and window treatments for 2 windows (only using 1)
  • Nightstands: TBD
  • Lamps: Already had the lampstands, shades were from Target for $12 each
  • Ottoman: Target, $39.99
  • Tray: Hobby Lobby, $4.99 on sale
I love the different feels of the separate rooms. The first room reminds me so much of the room we stayed at in Destin: light, calm, relaxing. The second room is more bold, more dramatic. You can see I used an island scent in the first room, which really completed the look and feel I was going for. In the second room, I used a cranberry scent which gave it a touch of traditional elegance.

The only things missing are a few wall treatments and a luggage rack for each closet. :)

Sooo....

Who wants to be our guest(s)?!
