Bloody Brain Red Velvet Cake

October 31, 2013

Yes. This happened today.

It was SO easy, but super time-consuming. It took three boxes of red velvet cake mix, 9 eggs, 3 cups of water and 1 cup of vegetable oil. There are three layers of the 9-inch base level and two layers of the 6-inch top level, with a layer of store-bought icing in between each level (eek! I know...store-bought...but, knowing it would take forever to craft this gem, I didn't have time to make my own).

The brain on top was made of fondant. I made it using marshmallows, powdered sugar (I did not measure either) and a little bit of vegetable shortening.

To make the blood red syrup, I used mostly corn syrup, a little chocolate syrup and red food coloring. Again, I did not have time to measure, I just mixed and poured.

This won first-place in my work's Halloween Dessert Contest, so it must've tasted halfway decent on top of looking a little disgusting. :)
