Tissue Paper Coasters: Too Easy

December 30, 2013

Continuing on my Vera Bradley Java Blue kick, I thought it would be fun to make coasters containing my favorite design. This project was a first for me, and after completing it with ease, it most definitely will not be my last [warning to my friends/family with upcoming birthdays...you can expect to receive personalized coasters. :)]

I, of course, found the idea of using tissue paper on Pinterest (go figure). The hardest part was taping the tissue paper to the computer paper! Here's how they turned out:

I used Adobe InDesign to create the design, then taped white tissue paper to computer paper and fed it manually through a laser printer.

Here's what I used to create these:
  • 4"x4" travertine tiles
  • White tissue paper
  • Mod podge
  • Foam brush
  • Cork
  • Waterproof spray sealer
We found a box of nine travertine 4"x4" tiles at Lowe's for around $5, and I got a package of pre-cut 4"x4" cork from Hobby Lobby for the backing.

After attaching the cork squares to the backs and cutting the squares of tissue paper, I used mod podge to glue them to the tiles. Then, I brushed another layer of mod podge on top and waited for it to dry.

I sprayed a waterproof sealer on top so sweating glasses wouldn't damage them (the mod podge may be waterproof, I didn't check. Another protectant layer wouldn't hurt, anyway).
