Weekend Project: Mediterranean-Inspired Patio

June 13, 2017

There's something about summertime that puts new, fresh ideas in our heads. The latest: this cute flagstone patio for our outdoor table, chairs and LED-lit umbrella.

This project was a little pricey but not too time-consuming. Maybe it will be our last project so we can enjoy a summer of backyard fun — and wine. ;)

Here is a before-and-after of the space, which I originally tried talking Hubs into transforming into a putting green. My efforts fell short but, as you can see, I'm okay with that. :)

Now, it's a waiting game...

Eventually, grass will grow between the rocks — you can already see a few sprigs poking through — and it will give it a Mediterranean flare.

Update Aug. 5, 2017:
The grass has filled the space between the rocks!

When we decided we needed to add a place for outdoor dining, we strategically placed it just north of our covered deck — allowing the summer's south breeze to blow the mist directly on us so we can still enjoy it even on those hot days.

We used the sand from my beach to level the flagstones — ironically called blue Stigler rock — and to fill in the gaps between them. This will help the rocks settle and allow the grass to grow in the coming weeks.

(Don't worry, we refilled the beach with some fresh white sand.)

Until then, we will sip our wine at sunset from our beach, deck, outdoor bar, or under this impressively bright umbrella.

Not kidding...I was shocked at the amount of light this umbrella puts out. If you'd like one, it's this Sundale solar-powered LED, 9 foot, with crank in khaki. We got it from Amazon on sale, so the price will vary.

I seriously think this will be our final major project in this backyard. It now includes a covered deck with space for seating, hammock swinging, grilling and gazing from the bar, a place for me to put my toes in the sand and soak up the sun, a fire pit for roasting marshmallows, a water feature, zero-maintenance landscaping, a misting system for those uber-hot days, a play set for Bryson, and now a place to enjoy al fresco dining. What more could we want? {A pool, possibly? Probably wishful thinking...} In the coming years, we plan to add some pull-down shades and additional lighting...maybe a TV, but nothing too big.

Just for fun, here's an "aerial" shot of our work from the top of the play set.

It's been an incredible transformation and I remain eternally grateful for the skill, willingness and hard work Corey has put in it. Now, it's time to enjoy it!
