World's Best Honey Mustard + The Amped-Up Ham Sandwich
April 17, 2012We all have those recipes that we swear by. This new-fangled honey mustard recipe is no different. Example: I now eat it on my salads instead of ranch dressing (jaw-dropping, I know :P).
Before I show you how to make the most awesome honey mustard ever, hop over to my Garden page to see the amazing strides we've made in growing our own vegetables! You won't believe the progress! Plus, we added one last landscaping touch to our front yard. Here's a sneak peek:

One funny fact you may not know about me is I have always eaten my french fries with mustard. When I was younger, I decided I did not like ketchup (still don't), but I LOVED mustard (still do). For me, it was always ketchup vs. mustard. So when everyone else was eating ketchup on their hot dogs and french fries, I was slathering on the good ole yellow stuff. It just seemed natural. Mom and dad ate ketchup with theirs, so that must've meant I was eating mustard with mine. No questions asked.
Now, on sandwiches, like turkey & ham, I have to have mayo. Not just any mayo, Hellman's mayo. But a few days ago, I was craving a mix of the two, and I decided to look up a recipe for honey mustard. I found one that looked pretty simple: mayo, mustard, honey and worcestershire sauce. So off I go...
Toss together 1/4 cup mayo...
...1 tablespoon of yellow mustard...
...1 tablespoon of honey...
...1 teaspoon of worcestershire sauce...
and whisk together.
For some, this is a perfect stopping point. For me, it was missing that "kick." What do I add?
Cayenne pepper of course, what else? J
While I like things super-spicy, the Hubs doesn't always like to gulp a liter of milk in between each bite, so add a little at a time until it reaches the right degree of spicy.
Just that touch of cayenne pepper really took it up a notch. But, you know me. I'm always searching for ways to take simple things to different levels. Now, I might not have been the first to come up with this idea, but I honestly did not find it on Google. I had just picked some fresh cilantro from the garden and I chopped it up and tossed it in:
Talk about flava-flav! All the right kinds in all the right places. Yum! It is great on salads and with sweet potato fries (that probably sounds weird huh?), and chances are you have all of the ingredients already.
Whatcha waitin' on? J
Last night, I got home from work and Hubs was rearranging and organizing the garage. I wasn't really feeling a heavy, cooked meal, and I thought a sandwich would be perfect for dinner. Sandwiches are almost too easy, but you have to want to step them up a notch for them to be better than the ole PB&J. Don't get me wrong, the classic PB&J is my go-to quick-fixer lunch, but for dinner, I should go bigger and better.
This is the amped-up ham sandwich dinner:
You're probably thinking, "What makes this so special?" That can be answered by applying generous amounts of the above cilantro honey mustard to each slice of bread. Be sure and toast the bread first; if not, the honey mustard will make the bread soggy. Usually I grill the whole dang sandwich, but I didn't feel like washing the panini grill or skillet so I just toasted the bread and threw some ham, swiss cheese and fresh lettuce from our garden on it. It's amazing how much better home-grown lettuce is. It's probably a mental thing. Or a pestacide thing.
Two nights ago, we sliced up a few sweet potatoes and made fries out of them and topped them with some coarse sea salt; they were amazing! For some reason, I had never tried sweet potato fries before; up until a few months ago, I hadn't even tried a sweet potato. We dipped the fries in the honey mustard sauce and wow! So good! Last night we just had veggie chips as a side to the semi-healthy sandwich (if served on whole grain wheat bread).
Next, I thought we needed something different to drink besides the usual tea, milk, etc. The weather was a warm 70 degrees and for some reason it reminded me of my days making cherry limeades at Charlie's Chicken in Big Stig, so that's what I whipped up.
It was a very quick, easy summery dinner and I'm sure I'll be making them for many nights to come.
As always, check my Recipes page for the cilantro honey mustard recipe and more! And don't forget to visit the Garden page where spring is not the only thing that has sprung. J
