Top Ten Tuesday: My Future Craft Room
July 16, 2013
If you followed along with me during the construction of our new house, you may have noticed our HUGE study. In the original plans, it was meant to be a bedroom, but with two guest bedrooms on the other side of the house, we wanted to keep it a split floor plan. To this day---nearly TWO years after moving in---we still have not done a thing to that room other than move Hubs' gun safe in there. It was, however, decorated pretty neat for Halloween (I can't find a picture, but we put white sheets over everything, filled it with fog and turned on a strobe light).
All it has been is a room we have to tell guests is still "undecided." I thought I wanted it to be a library/reading room with plush seating and soft lighting. Then we wanted to make it an actual study with a desk and shelves. Both of those ideas weren't really us and sounded a little boring, then I got the most brilliant of ideas...A CRAFT ROOM!
This will solve a few problems we currently have: 1) I am in the middle of making things for my Pinterest Party and have things stored all over the house. I was already running out of space to store things. 2) When I need space, I take up the dining room table, the floor, the bar...wherever I can find it. A dedicated work space would mean less clutter left around the house. It would also mean I wouldn't have to rush around trying to chaotically organize things everyday. 3) Sometimes I want to make things I see on Pinterest simply because it's cute and I already have all of the supplies, whether or not it actually fits in our house. In my craft room, anything would be welcome!
I had to convince Hubs he had an entire garage full of stuff he liked to do...where am I supposed to work on things I like to do? Everything inside the house is OURS, but I tend to stay out of the garage. That's his space. Now, I will have my space, too! I can't wait to get started on it!
Here are my Top 10 Craft Room Must-Haves:
1. A Workbench
I LOVE the center island idea! I actually thought of that before I began searching Pinterest for craft room ideas! The only exception I would make would be to replace the plastic bins with baskets or cloth storage bins. And I don't do well with white, so it may have to be a different color. Otherwise, love, love, love it.
2. A Peg Board
Look how organized everything is! The best part? We recently acquired a few peg boards from Hubs' mom and he only had room for one. I'm thinking maybe a little paint and chevron stripes will be the way to go. And I love how they framed this one. Makes it look less garage-y.
3. Buckets
Brilliant. And adorable.
4. Mason Jars
Mason jars are so inexpensive, it's silly NOT to use them. I already have a case of them, chalkboard paint and chalk! Maybe I'll make these tonight! Oh, wait....no place to store them. :(
5. A Colorful Hutch
How cute is this?! Aahhhh, I love it!
6. A Paper Towel Ribbon Holder
I hate it when the ribbon spool falls off the counter and I have to chase it down and wind the ribbon back up. This looks like the perfect answer to that.
7. A Pretty Lighting Fixture
I am loving that antique chandelier hanging over the work station. With 10-foot ceilings in my craft room, whatever fixture I use will be a focal point of the room.
8. Wood or Laminate Flooring
Having carpet in a room where paint is being used is a bad idea in general. Having carpet in a room where I am painting is worse than giving me a slice of pizza while I have a white shirt on. Something is going to get spilled. And Hubs will end up laughing at me. Luckily, we will not have to save much $$ to change the flooring in just that room.
9. Uniquely Colored & Designed Walls
I LOVE the stenciled design on the wall in the very first picture, but this "creativity" wall quote is a MUST. Still not sure on the color scheme I want to use in my craft room...it's still in the beginning stages. Maybe I'll make part of one of the walls a chalkboard?
10. A Pinning Station
I totally just made this up, LOL, but I have so much space to work with, why not? I could easily fit a plush chair or even a sofa in this room. The bay window would also make a perfect area for a window seat with storage underneath. Ah, the possibilities.
So there are my 10 must-haves for my craft room. I'm sure it will be a while before it actually happens, but hopefully it will sooner rather than later.
