Nursery Sneak Peek!
January 12, 2015
Actually, thinking back...my last post was made on Sept. 29. The next day, we got our first positive pregnancy test, so maybe we have been busier than I thought preparing for the arrival of our little man!
Needless to say, A LOT has happened these last three months, and it's been SO MUCH fun! Telling your parents they're going to be grandparents is always a good time (in my parents' case, they'll have two grandsons only nine months apart!), plus telling your friends and the rest of the world! Then, we found out on New Year's Eve we are expecting a little boy! Oh the fun we've had these last two weeks beginning to prepare his nursery!
We could not be more thrilled, and Hubs is so excited to have a reason to build new stuff! He's already constructed a wooden pallet sign to go over the crib and corner shelves made of the same pallet wood. The best thing about those projects? They were FREE! Businesses are always looking to get rid of old palettes, you just have to find them! The only cost came from the galvanized metal letter we put on the sign above his crib. It's VERY boy-ish, and we love it! (Let's face it...the style of nurseries is more a reflection of the parents' tastes. By the time he gets old enough to even notice the colors and what's on the walls, he will want it done in something completely different.)
Anyway, on deck for Hubs' project list is a toy hutch. The first few months I will likely use it for blankets, diapers and maybe a few toys. I think it will definitely come in handy as he gets older.
While he has been busy with those projects, the sewing machine and I have become BFFs. I first learned how to use it just a few months ago, and boy did it take a lot of trial and error. I've already made a baby blanket, burp cloths, curtains, a basket liner, a pillow, a changing pad cover and a fitted crib sheet. They are by no means perfect, but I can't wait to see how they all fit together when the nursery is finished.
Without giving too much away, here's a sample of what I've created and the look I'm going for:

I have never liked the "themed" nursery...you know, baseball, tractors, animals, etc. Instead, I have always favored a look of prints and corresponding solid colors.
In this case, the room we are turning into his nursery already had a crimson accent wall. We decided to run with that color, plus a few others to complement it. I found the perfect plaid print at Hobby Lobby, and I am using that as the main fabric, being careful not to overdo it.
The two pictures above I posted to my Facebook page, but for clicking the link and reading to this point, here's an extra just for you:
I found this adorable metal basket at (where else?) Hobby Lobby and had a few scrap pieces of fabric. I looked up a tutorial online and voila! This was only my third thing to make, so my hemlines were not perfect (nor are they on the more current things I've made, haha. Still on the "beginner" level...). This will be used to hold diapers by the changing pad.
When we get finished with his nursery, the crib and dresser will be the only items in it that can be found somewhere else. The wall art, bedding, toy hutch, shelves, curtains...literally everything else...will have been made by either me or Hubs. I'm just trying to get all of my creativeness out before he gets here in June. I know there won't be any time then to be making new stuff!
I cannot wait to show off the rest of his nursery when it's complete!
