A Nursery & A Name
March 08, 2015Eek! I'm SO excited to finally share with you our sweet little man's nursery! Both Hubs and I have put a lot of work into it and we are very proud of it! (Scroll down to the very bottom to see what we are naming him and the fun story behind it.)
As you will see, the metals and unfinished wood give the nursery a rustic touch. Hubs' handmade hutch and dresser topper offset the natural finishes with their deep, rich tone. I love how it all comes together with the plaids and earth tones I used for the bedding, curtains, etc. One thing is for sure...he will have a unique nursery all his own.
You may remember this post showing how I made this mobile. I purchased one on sale at Target, ripped it apart and made it new and relevant to his nursery. As you can see, I went back and added three times the number of dangly doodles (not sure what else to call them, haha). We tested it out by putting our 6-month-old nephew in the crib, and he loved it! Hopefully our little guy will love it, too.
I also made the pillows in the background and the plaid sheet.
The big metal letter came from Hobby Lobby. Hubs drilled holes in it and wired some globe string lights and a switch to make it a sort of lamp. We had acquired some old pallets and were waiting until we ran across the perfect project to use them. Hubs tore apart some pallet pieces and attached the 'B' light to it. Voila!
The thing I like about this piece is, in the future, if the little guy doesn't want a big 'B' on the wall, it will be easy to take it off and replace it with something else, but still keep the pallet wood. Hopefully by that point, he will want to build something of his own with his daddy. :)
Again, I made the changing pad cover and the basket liner. Once we decided on colors, patterns and a style, I immediately got to work on sewing everything. It was fun while it lasted, and I'm happy I got all of it out of the way weeks ago.
Hubs made the frame for the changing pad, and it is made to fit perfectly atop the dresser with compartments made to fit specific things, like the basket and wipes container.
Hubs built these shelves using the same old pallet wood he used for the wall hanging above the crib. While they serve a decorative purpose, we will also be able to use them for his monitor and humidifier.
Once we got his crib and dresser placed, there was a bit of extra, unused space. Hubs decided to build a hutch because you can never have too much storage, right?
I LOVE this piece. To start out, we'll be able to store lots of necessities in it. As he grows, I'm sure he will fill it with toys and whatever it is boys collect and play with. Plus, it gives me an extra area to display some coordinating and unique pieces, like this lamp:
This lamp started out as this:
The only things missing are the bumpers I'm having made. Have you ever heard of wonder bumpers? They are padded bumpers for each individual crib slat. When they're complete, they will coordinate with the rest of the bedding and fabrics and will help protect his noggin when he starts rolling into them. :)

As for the little guy's name...there's a brief story that goes along with how we chose it.
In the late '80s when my sister and I were born, our parents didn't find out beforehand what they were going to be having. They had to be prepared for a boy OR a girl. I'm not sure if the ultrasound technology was not available yet or they just wanted to be surprised. Either way, they had boy and girl names picked out for both of us.
The boy name they had picked out for me was unique at the time, but now it's a more common name (although I do not know any boys personally with this name). So, the name they had picked out for me had I been a boy, and the name of our little guy, is....
Bryson Daniel Wall
'Daniel' is Hubs' middle name and fits perfectly with 'Bryson.' :) We love our little Bryson and cannot wait to meet him!
Here's a pic of what is above the dresser. I wanted to keep this wall subdued since there is a lot going on with the changing pad, etc. I found these rustic wood frames in my craft/junk room and had Hubs make a plywood backing for one of them so I could cover it with fabric. I covered some pendant triangles from Hobby Lobby with coordinating fabric and used stick-on letters to spell out his name. Super easy and inexpensive!
Well, there you have it! Our sweet little Bryson's room is ready for him and all we have to do is fill it with diapers, blankets and all of the necessities. Only three more months to go! :) <3
